MANHATTAN on STEROIDS

13-20 December 2005

"In Hongkong they strike a gong and fire off a noonday gun." --Noel Coward.

David was in Hong Kong as an official observer of the World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference; Mary was there for pleasure.
The "Star" Ferry is the cheapest and most scenic way to travel
from Hong Kong Island to the Kowloon Peninsula.
For $2.20 (Hong Kong, that's about 29 cents American)
you can ride the ferry made famous by William Holden
and Nancy Kwan in the movie The World of Suzie Wong.

Thank you Lenny!
Rickshaws are just for atmosphere; the way to get around is in a taxi, as these queued up at Stanley Market. And while you're out, skip Stanley, the bargains are better off Nathan Road in Kowloon.
Aberdeen Fishing Village.
Victoria Park is a reminder of Hong Kong's colonial past.
Occupied by the UK in 1841, Hong Kong was ceded by China the following year. Under an agreement signed by China and the UK in 1984, Hong Kong became the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China on 1 July 1997. Under China's "one country, two systems" formula, China's socialist economic system will not be imposed and Hong Kong will enjoy a high degree of autonomy (except foreign and defense affairs) for 50 years. Take the tram to the Peak for a spectator view!

Then off for shopping! A visit to one of Mary's favorite shops -- LUSH. And material for another Post-Gazette column.

View of the garden and Hong Kong Harbor from our room at the Renaissance Harbour View Hotel.
Christmas cocktails at the Peninsula Hotel in Kowloon. (Thank you Jan!)
